The Voyeur's Web

Synopsis:
The NCIS team takes on a strange case – a Marine's wife was murdered live on the Internet. The investigation reveals that two housewives were running a live Internet sex site and now they are both missing. While looking for them, the team will try to track down the webmaster and solve the alleged murder case.

Episode Recap:
Opening up in typical NCIS fashion, we get our first glimpse of the crime. A masked woman is kneeling on her bed doing a little striptease for a webcam audience. A viewer asks her, via his keyboard, to “take it all off”, but she types back to him to be patient and goes back to her little tease. The viewer then sees a figure in black in the doorway to the bedroom, behind the woman. He tells her to turn around and look behind her, and when she does, the figure attacks her, slits her throat, and turns the webcam to show her body.

Tony, on the phone trying to get a table at an exclusive restaurant for his date’s birthday, has just come to realize that McGee has been tricked by Ziva into giving her personal information on Tony. Tony then receives the obligatory smack to the back of the head by Gibbs and the team is off to their new case: A Corporal’s wife, Jamie Carr, is missing and the police think that she has been abducted. No one has seen her in three weeks and the back door of her house had been kicked in.

Ziva is sent to survey the neighbors, McGee to get the equipment, and Tony and Gibbs begin to look around the Carrs’ home. The victim’s husband is in Iraq. Gibbs finds a clean spot on the carpet in the bedroom and tells McGee to “break out the Luminol.”

Ziva looks through a yard sale next door as she asks questions of the neighbor, Bart Powell, a “domesticated house husband” whose wife is also in Iraq.

Ziva walks into the crime scene where the rest of the team are looking for clues and sniffs the air. She announces that she smells Javier Christian #5, a $2,000 an ounce perfume, a little on the high side for a housewife. McGee enters and reports that he found blood drops out back under bags of mulch when he abruptly stops and looks around the room as if trying to remember something. He realizes that he’s seen the room before, says his girlfriend emailed him a video clip with this room. The clip showed a woman supposedly being murdered live on the Internet. McGee assumed it was a hoax or a badly filmed snuff film.

Cut to Abby’s lab where they have the video playing. Abby says that she can find no signs of tampering or special effects. This video came from victim’s computer where they also find out that she’s been running a sex site from her bedroom. Anyone logged onto the site during the murder could have emailed out the video clip, which could be any of hundreds or thousands of members who paid to access the site. There was another housewife featured on the site, Leanne Roberts, a neighbor of the Carrs'. The team goes to her house to question her.

McGee beats himself up about not reporting the video, whether or not he believed it was real. No one home at the Roberts’s residence and it seems to have been empty for a while. The team hears a crashing and a low wail come from the house, so they force their way into the house to see a cat jumping around the living room and growling low. Upon further inspection of the house they find it is empty otherwise, but they do find blood on a broken glass table.

2 crime scenes, 1 website, 50,000 hits a day to the Naughty, Naughty Neighbors site. Gibbs wants the names of all members of the website, and where the money collected from the site is, and sends Tony and Ziva to interview the webmaster, Carter Finch.

Ducky and Palmer are in the autopsy room using video stills of the murder to “autopsy” the victim. Ducky concludes that the murderer was an amateur, and cut too shallow which would cause the victim to die slowly and painfully.

Tony and Ziva find Carter Finch in his basement room of his mother’s house. They both find that fact very amusing as Finch is in his late 20’s or early 30’s; that and his extensive Star Wars collection and his deep attachment to it. Finch says that he knew nothing about the murder or the video, and hadn’t heard from either Leanne Roberts or Jamie Carr in a month as the website “practically runs itself”.

Abby with her PhD in porn learns (1) that she is not nearly as flexible as she should be and (2) the date and time that the video was recorded. Abby reports to Gibbs that Jamie Carr was murdered 8 days ago. Gibbs leaves and as Abby goes back to watching videos, a man quietly enters and startles her. It seems that rather than give her a raise for doing the work of 10 people, NCIS has assigned Abby a new assistant, “Charles Sterling reporting for duty”. Abby excuses herself to call Gibbs to complain. Gibbs asks Director Shepard to get rid of him; she says to “give it a month”.

McGee is getting frustrated because he cannot trace the money made from the website. The team is interrupted with the news that they found the body of Leanne Roberts. Off they go. The body was found in the trunk of a car in a junkyard. No idea on time of death yet, though cause of death was a compound fracture of the skull and her throat was cut AFTER she was dead. McGee gets stuck with the search effort to find Jamie Carr's body, possibly somewhere else in the junkyard.

Abby’s still watching porn videos. Ziva’s freaking out about her computer. McGee comes in with a knife he found at the junkyard, possibly the murder weapon.

Gibbs gets a video conference with Sergeant Roberts’ CO. He says that Roberts requested emergency leave and was planning to kill Bart Powell whom he thinks initiated the site. Roberts has already reached the States. The team gets to Powell’s house and Roberts is beating and threatening to kill him on his front lawn. Gibbs takes Powell in to NCIS.

Gibbs shows Powell a video of him in the Roberts’ house. He admits that he had an affair with Leanne Roberts. Gibbs says that it’s more like blackmail. Sgt. Roberts had received a letter in Iraq from his wife saying that Powell found out about the website and threatened to tell her husband if she didn’t sleep with Powell. Powell denies it all including the murders. Powell, it turns out, has an airtight alibi. Back to square one.

McGee finds the money, finally. Turns out the money was going into an account that belonged to Carter Finch’s retirement home-bound grandmother. He had emptied the account and walked away with close to a half of a million dollars.

Abby and Sterling watch the video looking at the murder weapon; it doesn’t match the knife found in the junkyard or anything else that she knows.

The team tracks Finch to a hotel using an online auction site that he was using to sell some of his Star Wars memorabilia but had closed the auction early, as he “no longer needed the money”. That is still the case as the team finds him dead in the hotel bathtub. Tony recognizes the scent, though, as the same perfume that they smelled in the Carrs' bedroom. They also find red hair dye residue in the drain. They find Jamie in the parking lot, a redhead, and handcuff her just as Abby calls and tells Gibbs that the knife is fake, something that you can buy at a magic store. Jamie had staged her own death, but Gibbs already knew that.

New Character Development / Insights:
  • Ducky's uncle, Major Monty Mallard, served in the armed forces at Normandy.
  • "The guys in the mailroom call her 'Energizer Abby'."
  • Abby doesn't like to be called "Ma'am."
  • Charles doesn't like to be called "Chip."
  • Jenny doesn't like to be called "Madam Director."
  • Tony has no idea what to do with a vibrator, but likes LaPerla
  • Jimmy likes basketball
  • Gibbs entrusted McGee to head up a search as an experienced investigator.

Funny Moments:
  • Tony discovers a device that starts buzzing in the Corporal's missing wife's drawer. When it won't stop buzzing, he performs unsuccessful percussive maintenance. Ziva has to demonstrate how to deactivate it. "Be careful; you could poke an eye out with that!"
  • Ziva angrily squealing at and performing percussive maintenance on her unresponsive PC.
  • Abby says she had a degree in porn after watching all of the tapes.
  • Abby calling Charles "Chip" against his wishes.

Trivia:
  • Abby's new assistant, Charles Sterling, is played by Donald Bellisario's son, Michael.
  • The driver's license for the corporals wife lists exam and expiration dates of 9-31. There is no September 31st. The driver's license for the second missing Navy wife has a typographical error: "Woodlaen" instead of "Woodlawn". The court code on her license is PWN NOO8Z, and the driver's license of the webmaster features court code L337 SK1775 – inside jokes from the graphic designer for anyone who understands leetspeak.
  • Abby's BOSE CD player plays a constant soundtrack in her lab. However, in the scene where McGee interrupts her leaving an urgent message for Gibbs, the music is playing, but the CD player's lid is open.
  • Gibbs calls for the team to "break out the Luminol" to examine the large, recently cleaned spot on the floor in Jamie Carr's bedroom for blood. Considering Abby's discovery of the fake knife, the team would have determined there was no real blood.
  • During the scene where Abby 'cut' her throat, Pauley Perrette forgot that Mark Harmon aka Gibbs was supposed to be ignoring her and did that jokingly. Gibbs reaction was a real reaction, not acting. The writers thought it was funny and left it.

Set an Email Reminder for NCIS: Los Angeles – HitFix

        By admin, March 31, 2010 5:11 pm

If you ask us, the folks over the Los Angeles branch of NCIS have been having it all too easy this season. There’s been gunplay and some fisticuffs, but for the most part, they’ve gotten off pretty easily. This week however sees Hanna forced to go …

        Morning

        By admin, March 31, 2010 1:46 pm

Following on from "Long Night". Couldn't leave Jimmy hanging on.

        MORNING By Bagpuss

Gibbs wouldn't have long to wait to confront Jimmy Palmer on the little matter of shooting to death the young woman who had, at one time, been his girlfriend.
The Agent found the lanky young man had not left the building. He was, in fact, sat on the floor against the wall of a dark and silent corridor. He'd been there for some time, alone with his thoughts.
Gibbs looked down at him as the young man raised his head to acknowledge him standing there.
"If you want to take a swing at me Palmer, go right ahead if you think it'll do any good."
Jimmy just stared down at the floor.
"What'd be the point? Even if I wanted to it wouldn't turn the clock back eight months."
Gibbs sat down next to him.
"Yeah. That was around the time Bankston took her sister."
Jimmy took out his celphone and started turning it over in his hand.
"I still have her picture and number on here." he said, reflectively.
"Jimmy, killing her was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do."
Jimmy sighed. "I know. It was for the best. That's what everyone keeps telling me. A part of me agrees. It's what she wanted, right? To make amends?" Jimmy asked, still toying with the phone.
" Yeah, that's about right." Gibbs replied.
Talking to Jimmy was proving to be easier than he thought, and Gibbs himself was taking comfort from their conversation too. He had meant every word of what he'd said. Caitlin Todd had once been faced with making the same choice he'd had to make that night. He had told her to put it behind her and move on, but it wasn't that easy in practice. Not when you were faced with killing a colleague. Not knowing what he knew.

Jimmy noticed the splint on Gibb's finger.
        "That looks painful".
        Gibbs just shrugged.
        "I've had worse."
A sudden thought crossed Gibbs' mind.
"What did you mean that time, when you said Michelle was using you?"
Jimmy suddenly became a little embarassed.
"Well, I meant sexually. She was the dominant one in the relationship. I just didn't want the others to know that, especially DiNozzo."
Gibbs allowed himself a wry smile.
"What I want to know is, did she suffer? " asked Jimmy.
        Gibbs shook his head.
"No. She hung on for maybe half a minute, then slipped away. It was quick."
"Thank God. I mean, well, we had split up and all, and with all that she did then maybe I shouldn't care. But I can't help it."
Gibbs fully understood. "That's not surprising. you two were close."
Jimmy chuckled slightly, remembering some of just what they used to get up to, then flipped open the lid of his celphone.
He scrolled through the menus till he found her picture. She was smiling. For a traitor and a murderer she had such a gentle face. He instantly dismissed this negative thought.
Gibbs spoke. "What you have to remember is that she never chose to be a villain. She chose to be a hero, and that's how she died, earning the right to wear the badge one last time."
And Gibbs had to admit to himself, despite everything that had passed between her and himself since he'd first met her, that she had earned his respect that night too, by making her final choice.

What Gibbs had said struck a chord with Palmer and he actually smiled.
"Better to be remembered as a hero, but I will miss her." he said.
"We all will, jim. One way or another."
        "Really?"
"Sure. She was one of us. She just forgot that for a while, that's all."

It crossed Gibbs' mind at that moment to maybe admit to Palmer what had been eating away at him since the incident. That for a fleeting moment on the bus he'd had a clear head shot at Bankston. Just a moment, but long enough to take him out without killing Lee. Yet still he'd put three rounds through her, at her request.
Had she lived she'd be on her way to Leavensworth in chains, with no hope of ever being released. Or possibly even tried and sentenced to death. Lethal injection was no way for her to die.
He decided to let things stay as they were. To say nothing to no one.
        He got to his feet.
"I'm sorry it had to be me Jimmy." he said, gently squeezing Jimmy's shoulder.
Palmer turned to him, looking slightly puzzled. "Isn't it one of your rules to never say you're sorry?"
Gibbs shrugged and replied, "Rules are meant to broken sometimes." He left a short gap and replied, "Like now."
"Is it morning yet?" asked Jimmy.
        "Almost. Sun's coming up."
Gibbs started to make his way back to the squadroom, continuing to reassure himself that he'd done the right thing by her.

        That just left Jimmy there.
He got to his feet, made up his mind to accept Ducky's offer to go home, take the rest of the day off. To move on.
There was just one last thing he had to do.
He selected Michelle's picture on his phone, then held his thumb over the delete button, closed his eyes and pressed.

LL Cool J no longer part of Sarah Palin’s "Real American Stories"

        By admin, March 31, 2010 12:50 pm

Including this on NCIS forum, as well…I know many viewers watch both shows.

NCISLA is a show that caters to the military being about the military. Do you have any idea how many of your military viewers and others watch Fox News on a regular basis? I would suspect it to be a large number. Why on earth would LL Cool J -"Todd Smith" not want to participate in/be a part of a real American Story, even if it meant pulling from an old interview. Does he not want to share the adversity that he has overcome or let others hear his story? I for one am very disappointed that he didn’t want to be included in this story….this isn’t about Sarah Palin…it is about overcoming adversity as a real American. What bigger audience, in tune with the military, for encouraging folks to watch NCIS LA could there be? Hmmm…maybe I need to re-evaluate what shows I participate by watching….very disappointed in LL Cool J.

        Excerpt from article below:

"Real American Stories features uplifting tales about overcoming adversity and we believe Mr. Smith’s interview fit that criteria. However, as it appears that Mr. Smith does not want to be associated with a program that could serve as an inspiration to others, we are cutting his interview from the special and wish him the best with his fledgling acting career."
