Leading the NCIS(Naval Criminal Investigative Service) team that operates outside of the military chain of command is Special Agent Jethro Gibbs, a highly skilled investigator and interrogator who is smart, tough and …

Excuses, excuses…not my fault, Gibbs!

◄ Back to NCIS Files

Gibbs has a habit of catching people out …even when "it's not what it looks like, Boss".
Favourite memories of these incidents include…

Abby in Gibbs basement in Bloodbath, middle of the night, drunk, working on his boat, feeling sorry for herself. She poses the theory that maybe it is all her own fault. Gibbs agrees. "How could you say that to me Gibbs? I didn't do anything wrong.

Just because some defective lunatic cannot get it through his skull that I think he is a ….defective lunatic….
That's not my fault, Gibbs! That's not my fault at all. (pauses, talks to self in surprised tone) That's not my fault! ….Hmph.
I can see why you like to work on your boat, Gibbs. Very, very cathartic. (she picks up mallet and chisel, hits the boat, and something falls off. Chastened, she hands the tools to Gibbs, with her eyes downcast). Oops. Suddenly having a stalker on the loose isn't so scary."

Kate "He had nice eyes."
DiNozzo "The Director…she has this thing about…
Gibbs: "secrets."
Tony: "yeah"
McGee I wanted to (come to you, Boss) and I know the law says innocent until proven guilty but we both know the system doesn't always work like that, and I couldn't take the chance. Not with (NCIS). Not even with you. She's my sister.
(Gibbs: Apology accepted).
Ziva…wearing McGee's elf lord hat *speechless*
McGee: "Honestly, the book isn't about you guys", Gibbs: throws the book in the trash.

HONOR CODE

6th July 2010

In what may or may not be a hoax, a six year old boy calls NCIS to inform them that his father, a Lt Cmdr who hold the only code to a top secret computer program, has been kidnapped.

This is one of the stand out episodes of season 3, principally for the interaction between Gibbs and the young boy, Zach. The scenes between them are great. Gibbs and Zach in Gibbs' basement working on the boat. Gibbs blowing up a rubber glove to entertain Zach. The entire Zach as mini-Gibbs story line.

Got to love the scene where Zach gets away from the kidnappers. Gibbs spots them and draws his gun. The kidnapper takes one hand off Zach to shoot back. Zach punches the bad guy in the genitals and runs to Gibbs. The whole scene is a delight to watch.

Ziva in autopsy expounding on ways to kill people without leaving a trace is great. Ducky is delighted and fascinated, and Gibbs is just plain annoyed.

The entire episode hangs together well making it a joy to watch. Repeated viewing does not dull the enjoyment of this episode.

Naturally, there are some excellent lines.

Tony: It takes a little more than an exotic accent and a few sneaky ninja moves to intimidate me.

Gibbs: One more word and you're all walking.

Tony: My dad left me in the Maui Hilton for two days. He didn't even miss me until he got the room service bill.

Gibbs (to Zach about Tony): You keep an eye on him for me.

Gibbs: You know why I like kids? When they lie they don't have the guile to get away with it.

Tony: Kids dig me.

Ziva: I was mistaken. Your way with children is rivaled only by your way with women.

Ducky: I really must ask you to dinner. Mother would love to talk with you.

Gibbs: And here I though you just wanted to spend time together.

Gibbs: Hubba Hubba!

Jenny: Zach's a good kid. Doesn't mean his father isn't a b*astard.

McGee: How many people owe you favors?
Ziva: How many dates does Tony go in in a month?

Gibbs: Zach, sometimes really bad people are good at fooling you.

EVOLUTION OF ZIVA DAVID

5th July 2010

One character who has come a long way in their personal journey is Ziva David.

Introduced in the season 3 opener "Kill Ari Part 1", Ziva David came to NCIS to allegedly prevent Gibbs from killing her half brother Ari, another Mossad operative. Ziva learns that Ari is not what he appears to be and kills him to save the life of Gibbs. At least, that is what we believed until season 7.

Ziva is probably one of the more complex characters within the show. A Mossad agent and trained assassin, Jenny Shepard brings her into NCIS as a liaison. The question has never been answered as to why NCIS, which is a law enforcement agency would want or need a liaison with Mossad, which is an espionage agency. It is not as if the US Navy and Marine Corps have a huge presence in Israel that would make such an arrangement even remotely feasible.

Season 3 saw Ziva trying to win acceptance from the team. When you think about it,making her part of the team was a nasty and cruel move on the part of Jenny Shepard. Ziva's brother had murdered their fellow team member, Kate. It is not as if Ziva needed a place to get away from Mossad. In reality, as we discover in season 7, she killed Ari on her father's orders as Deputy Director of Mossad (as he was then).

We watched Ziva struggle with the concept of being an investigator and not a spy. As well as struggle with the quirks of idiomatic American English. This trait alone endeared her to many.

Throughout seasons 4 and 5 Ziva grew into a competent investigator. In season 6 she is pitch forked back into Mossad as an undercover operative, this time to track down a mole within NCIS which threatens the national security of both the USA and Israel. She becomes close to her partner in Mossad, Michael Rivkin. When she returns to NCIS she is torn. She wants to be with NCIS, but a part of her remained in Israel with Michael.

When Mossad sends Michael to the USA, is when we learn just how conflicted Ziva is. I have wondered since the events of season 6 if Eli David sent Michael to the USA to test where Ziva's true loyalties lay. Was she still at heart a Mossad operative, or had she developed a loyalty to her foster country? The events of "Legend Part 1", "Legend Part 2", "Semper Fidelis" and "Aliyah" showed us just how torn and conflicted Ziva was. She turns to Gibbs to help her solve her internal conflict. He gently tells her, by his actions in "Aliyah", that she must make her own choices. Ziva choses Israel and goes on the mission for Mossad that results in her capture and brutal treatment at the hands of terrorists.

It is season 7 that showed us the most growth in Ziva. Rescued by the people she rejected, and brought back to the USA, Ziva makes a startling decision. She abandons not only Mossad, but her father and country. Vance bends the rules for her so she can become an NCIS agent. Providing she becomes an American citizen. Ziva throws herself into this whole-heartedly. When we last see Ziva in season 7 she is swearing her Oath of Allegiance to the USA.

As we move forward into season 8 we can guarantee that the character of Ziva will continue to grow, as she adjusts to her new life and continues to deal with the aftermath of her captivity.

CALL OF SILENCE

4th July 2010

This second season episode has to be one of the all time favorite episode for many fans. For those of you not familiar with the story, a WWII Medal of Honor recipients confesses to murdering his best friend during a battle at Iwo Jima almost 60 years ago. Believing there is more to the story, the team work to solve the mystery.

The actor who played Cpl Ernie Yost was nominated for an Emmy award for the role. Given that this character is the pivot around which this episode wings, and the sheer raw power of his performance, I consider him to have been dudded in not being awarded the Emmy. Cpl Yost is one of the most rounded one-off characters we have seen in NCIS. There wouldn't be another single episode character with as much viewer impact until the episode "Mind Games" with the serial killer Kyle Boone.

I have one major niggle, and it is one that DPB should have known, being a Marine himself. A Medal of Honor recipient is entitled to a salute from all ranks, up to and including the President of the USA in his capacity as Commander in Chief. When Tony pulls Yost's jacket back to show the medal, the two Marine guards snap to attention and salute. Cmdr Faith Coleman does not. In not doing so, she broke protocol and grossly insulted a recognized hero.

The scene in interrogation where Gibbs recreates Iwo Jima in Yost's mind to get to the truth was one of the most powerful and memorable scenes in NCIS' history. Kate and Faith and crying. And when the camera pulls back, you can see Gibbs' eyes are filled with tears.

The emotional rawness of that scene was beautifully offset by the final scene in the Japanese restaurant. The touching gesture of Yost and the former Lieutenant of the Imperial Army of Japan touching saki cups together was just the right note.

"Call of Silence" has some great lines.

Gibbs: You don't order. You eat what you're given with a smile. Just like being married.

Abby: Cold case?
Gibbs: Icicled.

Gibbs: The older they are, the sneakier they get.

McGee: I put out an APB on trains, buses, taxis, walker rentals.

Gibbs: I want it so real I can smell the sulfur.

Abby: We're trying to give you a little background here.
Gibbs: I got that. At Parris Island.

Gibbs: All we have to lose is a little time.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE REVISITED

1st July 2010

As I got a good response to my original blog on this season 6 episode, I thought I would take another look at it.

One thing every respondent agreed on is that we want baby agent Dwayne Wilson back. His earnestness and sincerity won the character a legion of fans. The character interacted well with Tony and with Gibbs. Det.Beckett commented "And I love how the crew was quick to take him under their wings and subject him to the usual teasing." Whilst not wanting to add Dwayne permanently to the team, it would be great to see him around the office and maybe help out on cases where they need a spare pair of hands. He also has a potentially interesting back story with his father accused of murder while serving in Vietnam.

Leading from that, a lot of people agreed with my thought that the agent who exonerated Dwayne's father being Mike Franks. It's the sort of thing we've come to expect from NCIS.

A number of people commented on how well this episode led back into the mole story arc. Ending as it did with Gibbs putting Langer's ID on the wall of fallen heroes in the bar. Poignant and very powerful.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my original blog.
